When Mozart wrote his two magnificent Piano Quartets, he was composing for this specific instrumentation for the first time. Virtually slimmed down piano concerti, both works are radiant and colourful, with the string trio providing both contrast and support to the piano. In particular, the second movement of the E flat Quartet is notable for its sublime atmosphere and expressiveness.
